Eep. As long as you don't stick the vacuum cleaner nozzle in it!

*tries to sample darkness with tongue while waiting for Phoenixz to finish thinking of an idea*

Hmmm, I just had a thought. If you were going to manufacture a waking nightmare/dream for someone, wouldn't you have to plant some kind of trigger in order to get that person to go back to sleep again? It's doubtful that after you've just scared/worried/tried to eat them, they'd want to peacefully lie down in bed and go back to sleep, and if they don't go back to sleep, the whole effect won't work...

What do you think?

Laughing Seems like an apt name.

Hubby just told me an anecdote that is often used in psychological-type circles after I mentioned what this thread was about...

A man goes to visit a psychiatrist because he believes himself to be dead.
The psychiatrist tries to make the man realise he's wrong.
Psychiatrist: Do dead people bleed?
Man: No.
*The psychiatrist picks up a pin and pricks the man's finger - which then bleeds.*
Man: Would you look at that, dead people do bleed!

Maybe I was wrong, perhaps it is possible to convince someone they are dead and any information to the contrary (like breathing) would simply prompt them to review what they understand being dead to be... rather than make them think 'I'm not really dead but I'll go along with it anyway because this balding mentalist has a cute little goatee'.

Again, it depends on the individual's perception of Death surely?

I percieve death to be pretty much like life only with more haunting of past nemesis and walking through walls.....

Or burning in the everlasting pit of damnation

or floating in a nighty on a cloud

What about effects like the needle through the hand? No blood then, no pain but obveously the subject wasn't dead.....

That one's in the ninja book too. So is stroking a frogs belly... (but perhaps that's a subject best left well alone).

Quote:
Shishinjutsu involves the piercing of one's own flesh with a long needle and not bleeding or experiencing pain in the process.

I re-pierced my ears after 7 years of not wearing earrings, do you think that counts?

Does this come down to your "pain is subjective" thing?

I can't take sole credit for that. The shishinpointyneedlejustsu is at least partly about that apparantly...

It doesn't mention wincing or making high-pitched squealing sounds (both of which I did when I did the earring thing.

It does mention not trying this at home kids.

and the frog stroking thing? Careful what you say here, it may be like porn to Carly's Toad.....

What about making someone face their worst fears? I am picturing that scene from harry potter with the boggart....

Or making someone think thet are a vampire or only have three mins to live....

The Milton element of the new special will be interesting to watch after this conversation....

The frog thing is about making a frog fall asleep by stroking it's belly. Also included is the ability to immobilise a snake by holding it with one hand and squeezing it with the other three times.

I should point out that these are included as the sorts of carnival tricks that were often associated with people claiming to have mystical ninja powers and Hatsumi is giving an indication of the trickery involved rather than claiming that they are mystical ninja powers.

One I think could be fun (although not really dark or morbid enough to be in this thread) is
Quote:
where a performer holding a six foot stick with his little finger pushes back an opponent who is pushing the other end of the staff with all his might.

Simply by using psychological manipulation and secret ninja magic obviously....

My mind has gone all ninja-fied now... in an effort to redeem myself with an idea that is darker than playing with big sticks, do you think it would be possible to convince someone that you (or someone else) was an evil nasty demon? It's kind of similar to some of the myths that ninja/shinobi used to encourage about themselves to keep people afraid of getting close to them.

Would this work for DVB or are most people convinced he is the devil incarnate anyway? (The goatee is a dead givaway).

Interesting...would it be possible to manipulate someone's view of you merely by what you suggest to them? Would they suddenly think they were seeing a demon? Or would it be more plausible to plant the idea that you are a demon, but that nobody knows except your victim?

The circles are the same as normal ones, just with greater understanding of what it is to be circular.

And an increased tendancy to be coloured in by inner-children.

I've had a thrilling day at work. I've been thinking about killing a collague or two (not seriously you understand, just in a general 'I can't believe she said that! I could so kill her!' sort of way).

Anyway - death.

We've chatted about convincing people that they are dead, or that they could kill people and predicting who they would kill... but how about convincing someone they've spoken with a dead person. Seance did that in the umm seance-y type way... but what if you staged a conversation between two people and then convince one of them afterwards that the person they were talking to had been dead for xx years? Like they'd seen and conversed with a ghost.

Do you think you could convince someone that ghosts are real?
