Coo, it sounds intriguing! I don't think I've ever watched 'Mission:Impossible'...*prepares for P-T's wrath*

There's 'The Truman Show' as well, along those same lines...

Answer: I know.

Someone could be convinced that they were dead, but even the being convinced means that they are alive. They are not psychologically dead - because they are psychological believing : we are back to trapped in belief systems again.

In short you can't 'hypnotise' someone into being dead, only into believing they are dead which is pointless.

No I'm afraid if you want to pursue this avenue SpasmFink it's 1000 watts, 3 minutes, and a lot of resusitation by a lot of very frightened medics thinking prison food if they don't get it right.

I don't know. But I think perhaps it would be a pointless exercise with most people because they would only recall (if anything at all) a richness that their minds would conjure for them.

You would need someone who could seperate from mind and still exist.

I think we're all headed that way.

You're missing out. As with any series, some episodes are stronger than others. I haven't seen many from the later series, but I've seen most of the first three.

My absolute favourite was 'The Mind of Stefan Miklos'. Which is too complicated to try and explain.

In a 'short con', you can only take them for what money they have on them or, now, what they could get out of a cash machine. The idea for long con games was to make people go and liquidate assets. Anything from a few to dozens of con men would be involved, all playing parts. The mark was put into a sort of play, where every major person he'd interact with was in on the con. Everyone knew their part and the mark would end up almost being railroaded into a situation where he'd go and get a large sum of money and bring it back to the con artists.

The film 'The Sting' was, if I recall correctly, also based on the same book that inspired 'Mission: Impossible', 'The Big Con'. It's an excellent read and it's quite staggering how much money the con men took (allowing for inflation).

'The Sting' is a fantastic film. Thoroughly enjoyed that!

I shall have to have a look around to see if I can find some eps of Mission:Impossible because I'm all curious now. It sounds just like where I'm coming from with that dream thing...

Am I the only one to think back to 'Flatliners' after reading that?

I have a vague feeling that there was an episode where they made someone think he was dreaming, then put him into situations that matched the dream.

There was something like that in 'The Avengers', but the idea there was to make people die of fright, as I recall. Possibly not quite what you are after here!

A tad drastic, I fear!

Although deep, building fear is what I was aiming for in my last suggestion... Twisted Evil

Make no mistake young Spasm, Kiefer Sutherland would look like a faerie. I'd love to do it. I've had a glimpse and I think I could do it - bring something so substantial back from the otherside that no-one could doubt survival (of some aspect) after death.

Still it is Christmas. Perhaps too heavy for the prevailing season I do become.

That reminds me of a Dean Koontz book, although I can't remember the title. Two characters had near-death experiences; one brought an agel back with him, and one a demon...

Yes, now you see that would make my previous suggestion all the more effective if my victim held the same philosophy! Imagine how he would feel by the time he got to the fire incident the next day?

Deep psychological scarring. What fun!

For our next trick we could try convincing someone they are an insurance salesman. Or would that be just too cruel?

Don't joke young Spasm. Derren isn't lying when he says he can drive you mad, mind is very subtle. He's not the only one either - they're everyway. You wouldn't like to get trapped in madness Spasm, that place where your thoughts spin around with an ungraspable velocity obscuring your external reality. Where peoples' eyes flick up/down, on/off , alive/dead with stammered speed. People become little more than gross lumps of flesh and insipid devilish grins come at you out of the darkness. A place where you are totally alone, where no-one can help you Spasm - where the only thing you can do is scream and try to remember where your head is so that you can attempt to crush, splat and destroy it against the nearest wall. This is madness, this is why one must hope that someone somewhere is keeping a close eye on this new fixation with psychological manipulation.

Of course it doesn't bother me much, been there - done that. I just change centre and watch my thoughts do their thing. Heck, I might even stand behind your shoulder and marvel alongside you at how crazy I really am. Very Happy

PS: Mental illness is not funny. Not well understood. You should never joke about it.
